Uplifting inmates! Madhya Pradesh Central Jail Gets FM Radio Channel To Provide Whereabouts Of The World

In its attempt to keep inmates informed about the outside world, Indore Central Prison has set up its FM radio channel “Jail Vaani-FM 18.77”. Inmates received a dose of entertaining information on various issues and become aware of what is happening in the world. The radio channel will also provide inmates with information on health issues.

Turning Prisons into Correctional Institutions

Talk to the media agency ANIthe prison superintendent, Alka Sonkar, said the aim of establishing a radio station was to rehabilitate inmates and turn prisons into correctional institutions. “Inmates will learn what is happening in the world”, she added.

The commissioner said that the authorities had completed all the formalities and taken the prior authorizations. She also credited Chief Minister Shivraj Singh for greenlighting the initiative on the first try.

The station has an audio console, microphone, recorder, speakers, amplifiers, computer panel with playback software, etc. Inmates can listen to music, trivia and various other programs like a talk show. It will be the icing on the cake if officials give interested inmates the opportunity to show off their talent by designing and producing radio programs.

It is said to be one of the best run prisons in the country. Although the prison can hold 1150 inmates, it currently has over 2500 prisoners. Due to overcrowding, the prison authorities are planning to move this central prison to the outskirts of the city, about 12 km from it.
