Golf is back, and it has brought a great tournament with it. This week’s Tournament of Champions marks the first week of nine straight months of PGA Tour golf and the 2021 $ 8 million winner’s field is among the top events of the year.

Not only do we have Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa battling it out for the world number 1, but we also have Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth trying to add to their collections of double-digit wins on the PGA Tour. more Phil Mickelson makes his first appearance in two decades. Oh, and we also have views of Hawaii in the dead of winter. And we get them in prime time.

We’re also getting them, for the first time, on ESPN + as the PGA Tour Live moves to this platform where it will see extensive and end-to-end coverage for this event. If you don’t want to dive that deep, whales will take turns on the Golf Channel every four days with perfect viewing weather on the east coast.

Whichever way you look, What that you watch this week is almost certainly going to be exceptional. With 16 of the top 20 players in the world involved on a fun, sometimes quirky golf course, golf is making a comeback for what should be another fabulous year.

The South African radio industry has proven over the past 20 months to be robust, agile and adaptable. The public and advertisers turned to radio stations for information, camaraderie and mutual connection. The power of the radio industry is highlighted in the latest RAM BRC data and this shows that the appetite for radio remains strong.

Many radio brands across the country have cultivated a deep trust with their audiences using their FM and digital platforms. This relationship has become increasingly important as the dependence on their primary source of news, entertainment and information increases. The rise of fake news and calculated disinformation is fought with reliable service, and radio has a proven track record in this regard.

In the wake of Covid-19 separating people socially, radio has managed to bridge the gap by practicing inclusiveness. Radio listeners now feel like they are part of communities and groups through storytelling, content, virtual activations and compelling engagement.

Radio audiences are constantly evolving, with connectivity and choice being the determining factors. Recent developments between mobile operators and ICASA concerning spectrum, is driven by consumers’ accelerated need for greater and faster Internet connectivity. Advancing work environments and consumer trends have catapulted people into the 4IR jets, enabling radio to create new opportunities for listeners in the digital space.

I’ve already talked about the benefits of a blended approach to new technologies and the power of our existing platforms. This statement remains true as we extend traditional and digital opportunities to our audiences. The Internet remains a key element for new audio offerings and niche content, online radio is not limited to reproducing FM services to audiences using the Internet. Perhaps as a starting point, why is online radio such a big opportunity for existing broadcasters?

Audio value chain

The South African radio industry has spent years developing and refining radio brands that resonate with the public. By understanding the power of broadcast and targeted delivery, successful industry players have created an audio value chain that advertisers and audiences alike rely heavily on.

Specialty programs and presenters have always created interesting additions to programming that has traditionally tried to attract the largest possible audience. Niche programming adds nuance and flavor to the sound of a station. Online radio is an opportunity to focus on niche audiences, music, and content. Online extends these pockets to full-fledged services.

Music streaming services and podcasts are considered major competitors for online radio. Through market research, we have found that radio is the perfect match for a variety of other media offerings. Radio is a meeting place for services and audiences. Online radio has the ability to promote and exploit audio on demand like podcasts, online radio creates opportunities to play and promote whole podcast parts or series. This medium still has the possibility of live engagement and human connection in real time and can integrate other audio content into the online listening experience.

Music streaming services are an opportunity for radio to broaden its offering. Since online radio enjoys the power of personality and character, this medium organically creates an organized music experience that can add emotion to a playlist. These can be extended to streaming playlists accessible as part of an integrated online radio experience. As good as the algorithms are, they don’t offer the warmth of personal experience.

Technological developments

Online radio stations can be grouped under one brand or can be an extension of a traditional FM station. As a result, a brand can offer many opportunities to listeners depending on their mood or situational need. Online radio is available with a swipe of the screen, in a variety of formats such as live sports, daily chats and casual hits.

As traditional practitioners, we understand the technology behind radio broadcasting. Online is a new space with a slightly different rulebook where brands can deliver premium audio offerings that don’t require huge budgets. Online radio is cost effective and reliable because we already have robust environments and technical infrastructure. We have experienced staff who have created the best online listening experiences using years of trial and error in FM environments. We have the technological know-how to deliver to a variety of distribution platforms.

Additionally, online radio creates a huge opportunity for media professionals, from presenters to journalists to content creators. Since geography is not an issue and technical barriers to entry are low, the industry is able to procure the best minds and skills available. We are also able to share our resources across multiple online stations, creating brand synergy and loyalty with talent that resonates with the public. Online radio creates flexibility which leads to more opportunities for everyone involved.

Technological developments and the more efficient use of streaming bandwidth improve the end-user’s listening experience. Using modern codecs also dramatically improves audio quality right at the point of broadcast. The cost of streaming from an online radio station has also always been seen as a barrier to entry, local provider IONO is able to provide an hour of audio streaming for as little as 20 m / b which dispels certainly the idea that online radio consumes a lot of bandwidth.

A colleague recently drove from Johannesburg to Cape Town listening to a local radio station, online. Despite a notable interruption in data transmission, most of the trip was spent with an online radio streaming via Bluetooth over the car stereo.

African Media Entertainment (AME) is excited about the opportunity that lies in the online radio space. AME radios (Algoa FM and OFM) have already extended their FM offer. OFM, covering the central regions of South Africa, carried out a very successful operation second online radio station serving a local musical need. On our radio platforms, we have highly trained practitioners who are excited to connect with existing and new audiences as we expand our footprint.

Dave Tiltmann is Managing Director of African Media Entertainment Group.

The Iowa soccer team returns to the Big Ten this week – and the Hawkeyes will have a short week to prepare for the game.

Iowa (4-0, 1-0 in Big Ten) travels to Maryland (4-0, 1-0) in a Friday night clash at College Park. The match, initially scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to Friday this summer. Iowa hasn’t played at College Park since the 2014 season, when the Hawkeyes lost a 14-0 lead and lost 38-31.

Iowa, Ranked # 5 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaching Survey, faces a team of Terrapins who are not ranked but who get votes in both Associated Press and Coaches polls.

On Saturday, Iowa successfully finished the non-conference portion of its season with a 24-14 v Colorado State. The week before, the Hawkeyes beat the state of kent, which Maryland easily beat Saturday, 37-16.

Jamie Ashbrook is Marketing Manager at Radio.co, based in Manchester, UK. He answered questions by e-mail.

Jamie ashbrook
Jamie ashbrook

Radio world: For those who do not know, what is Radio.co?

Jamie Ashbrook: Radio.co is a platform to host and manage your own online radio station. Think of it as the intermediary between you and your listeners.

But let’s face it, talking is cheap. Take a tour of what we can actually do. From choosing your station name to broadcasting live to thousands of listeners around the world, Radio.co has your online radio needs covered. So hurry visit on demand.

RW: Who created the business and who owns it?

Ashbrook: James Mulvany (on both fronts). He’s the man with the plan. Mr. Chief Honcho.

Having a love for both radio and business, a fresh-faced James started Wavestreaming in 2008. Starting out as a one-man band, the company quickly grew with the product. In just a few years, thousands of broadcasters were using the platform. But there was one problem: Technology changes rapidly, quickly rendering the system obsolete.

To keep things simple and one step ahead, Wavestreaming was torn down and then rebuilt into a simpler solution anyone could choose and use. In 2015, Radio.co was born.

Jacques Mulvany
Jacques Mulvany

James was there every step of the way. And I think it’s a good thing to see a founder who owns the company and is actively involved in making things better on a daily basis.

RW: Your website is titled “Want to Start a Radio Station?” And it seems intended for those who wish to create audio streams on the Internet. Are there any offers for actual broadcasters as well?

Ashbrook: Yeah. So there are actually a variety of people from different backgrounds who use Radio.co. Whether it’s small community stations like Shady Pines Radio, big Glastonbury style pop-up events like Complex Land or a student-run radio station like the one at the University of Manchester FM fuse, There is something for every taste.

Even traditional stations are getting into the action by relay their FM, AM or DAB stream online to reach listeners they would not normally have access to, such as Radio exe.

RW: What is Radio.co’s flagship product and what sets it apart?

Ashbrook: Trick question. No aspect is considered “flagship”. Radio.co is designed to be an all-in-one solution for broadcasters. But what sets it apart is the ease with which everything is operational. If you had to time yourself it would take roughly two minutes to launch your own station.

In saying this, there are a few characteristics that come to mind:

  • IOS and Android Apps: Put your station in the pocket of listeners.
  • Talk Shows: Invite guests to record collaborative shows in your browser.
  • Alexa Skill: Allows listeners to tune in with their voices on compatible Amazon Echo devices.
  • Newsletters: Deliver news hourly every hour from your preferred news provider.
  • Mixcloud integration: upload your DJ mixes directly to your Mixcloud account.
  • Listener requests: Automatically take song requests from listeners to play on your station.

And probably one more load that I forget. Without forgetting that there are plenty of help guides, new features, and quick assistance this makes Radio.co the ideal package for broadcasters of all sizes.

Radio.co users at Shady Pines Radio
Radio.co users at Shady Pines Radio. Brian Bauer and Callie Bauer are shown.

RW: Who are some of your customers that we would recognize?

Ashbrook: We are not the type to kiss and talk to each other (ok, we are a little). But we have had some great people and companies that have walked through our doors over the years.

(Deep breath) AC Milan, VICE, Parker’s Kitchen, The Barbican, Australian Government Department of Health, Son Primavera, M&C Saatchi, Radio Soho, Honest Burgers, Whiskas, Hotel Côtes, Smoked barbecue, Brit Asia TV Cafe Mambo, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, Whale Bone Magazine, Everton FC, Cult records, PHMG and Complex.

And one more load that we can’t talk about yet. But there are a few independent stations that you may not be familiar with as Radio Boogaloo, Melodic distraction, Diversity radio, and FM Foundation that are worth seeing.

RW: What is the most important trend or challenge in 2021, for the people who are your customers?

Ashbrook: The Covid changed everything. Most people got stuck at home, so they turned to the internet to stay in touch with others. The result? We saw 10 times more broadcasters each month than usual.

In terms of challenges, the biggest are those closest to the starting grid. Things like how to put everything together, the necessary equipment, and reach the right audience. But all are discussed in our University Radio, Blog and even on Youtube.

RW: What else do we need to know?

Ashbrook: The radio is changing. Regardless of the medium used afterwards, radio has adapted since its inception at the end of the 19th century.

Frankly, Radio.co is just one piece of the puzzle. But we’re happy to help broadcasters share their voices with a wider audience. Whether it’s a local, national or international community, I just can’t wait to see what happens next.

Saying all this I’m always happy to chat, so if you have any questions (yes you, the reader) drop me a line at [email protected]. And I hope I can help you.
