HONG KONG, Oct. 7 – A Hong Kong internet radio host was jailed on Friday after being convicted of “seditious” remarks opposing Chinese rule, calling for the city’s independence and the overthrow of its government .

Beijing has waged a broad political crackdown in Hong Kong after the Chinese financial hub saw huge and sometimes violent pro-democracy protests three years ago.

Edmund Wan – better known by his DJ name ‘Giggs’ – was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of “conspiracy to do an act with seditious intent” and three money laundering charges.

District Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching called the 54-year-old’s case ‘very serious’ because his words added ‘fuel to the fire’ at a time when Hong Kong was facing unrest generalized social.

Wan was “clearly flouting the law” as some of the 39 shows cited by prosecutors were aired after the enactment of a Beijing-imposed national security law, the judge added.

Security legislation, combined with a colonial-era sedition law, has been used to criminalize much of dissent in Hong Kong since the 2019 protests.

In a 2020 broadcast, Wan cited the ousting of former Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych and said Hong Kongers should also “kick out” then leader Carrie Lam.

Another broadcast accused the Chinese Communist Party of “cultural extermination” against minorities and said its national flag represented authoritarianism.

Wan used his broadcasts to appeal for donations to support young Hong Kongers who had fled to neighboring Taiwan.

Prosecutors pursued the money laundering charges, saying Wan’s bank accounts received funds for unclear reasons, totaling more than HK$10 million (RM5.92 million), which were “completely disproportionate” to his income.

As mitigation, defense attorneys argued that Wan was not a public figure seeking political gain and that his show had low viewing numbers on platforms such as YouTube.

Wan was first arrested in November 2020 and has been detained since February last year. He was only the second person to be arrested for sedition since Hong Kong was transferred from Britain to China in 1997. – AFP

GAA’s new media rights agreement with the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI) is expected to have major implications for community radio and online broadcasters.

The 2022-27 deal would have given exclusive live commentary rights to IBI members, preventing others from documenting games in real time.

Community stations and social media platforms covering live club matches are expected to be frozen by the arrangement.

On Wednesday, Community Radio Kilkenny City (CRKC) confirmed that it must “severely reduce” its GAA coverage with immediate effect as KCLR 96FM has secured exclusive rights.

A statement titled ‘Community Radio Sidelined’ from the CRCC read: “Kilkenny City Community Radio will no longer comment on any Kilkenny GAA matches (adult or minor) and will not report live matches in progress. On behalf of itself and its listeners, Kilkenny City Community Radio is extremely disappointed with the position in which the GAA/IBI agreement places it.

“Kilkenny City Community Radio will continue to provide detailed coverage of Kilkenny GAA matches on Sunday and Monday evenings, and we will also continue to provide extensive sports coverage on our other weekend sports (and music) programmes. The same level of restrictive coverage will also apply to Kilkenny City Community Radio in relation to Kilkenny Inter-County matches at all levels.

Featuring the likes of former GAA Chairman Nickey Brennan, Pat Treacy and Barry Henriques, the station’s award-winning coverage of Gaelic games in Kilkenny is known for its breadth.

The press release continued: “It should be noted that Kilkenny City Community Radio was often the only broadcast media in Kilkenny at many of these games. Kilkenny City Community Radio is proud of what it has achieved to date, and in particular that the entire sports team works as volunteers. Kilkenny City Community Radio is also fortunate to have many other volunteers around Kilkenny who provide regular match reports.

More details on GAA’s new media rights deals are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks. RTÉ and Sky Sports are expected to once again carve out the lion’s share of live Championship coverage, with the national broadcaster also officially taking over the Saturday night Allianz League package they claimed from Eir Sport after it was discontinued.

As previously reported, the BBC are set to resume more live televised Championship matches, amid speculation Newstalk could secure a slice of live Championship radio rights after missing out on the 2017-22 final round.

Even the marketing bumpers hint at something special: “A playlist as wide as the Lone Star State.” “Thank you for coming as fast as you could.” If only “Don’t Mess With Texas” wasn’t protected by that pesky trademark issue.

Welcome to Texas Music Experience, a streaming station that streams Texas artists 24/7, regardless of genre or era. Available on any computer or smartphone via the eye-catching tmx.fm URL, the site is a highly entertaining tutorial on the true breadth of the Texas music landscape. Imagine Freddy King in St. Vincent in Chamillionaire; or Spoon in Gene Autry in Kenny and the Kasuals; or Albert Collins in The Black Angels in Nelly. (Yes, Nelly.) At TMX, it’s routine.

“There are so many diverse voices and influences just within our borders, it’s amazing we have enough to create a 24/7 music service,” says Matt Reilly, Director of Austin’s KUTX-FM program, which hosts and operates TMX.

“I don’t imagine you would be able to do that with really many other states,” he adds. “Maybe California, maybe New York, but you don’t hear about the Indiana musical experience. There are great artists in every state of the union, but not enough to sustain a super diverse music service like TMX.

Texas Music Experience

Where: Broadcast on tmx.fm

Although indirectly, TMX grew out of the deep mediocrity of Houston’s radio scene. Growing up in Memorial, Reilly found himself frustrated with its lack of variety, even though the 80s were arguably as good as they ever were (at least for commercial radio). It certainly hasn’t improved.

“I remember when the Top 40 was Prince, Van Halen, [and] Bruce Springsteen all at the same time, and Kool and the Gang or Michael Jackson or whatever,” he says. “There were some brilliant flashes on the radio in Houston, but it was never sustained. I could never get more than an hour of really, for me, what I thought was great radio at a time. I really wanted to get into radio, and I just wanted to do better.

KUTX, the music-only twin of the capital’s longtime public radio KUT, is everything commercial Houston radio isn’t: curious, carefully curated, intensely community-focused. For a few years now, he’s hosted a stream made up entirely of Austin artists on one of his HD channels; this station plays over the Austin airport sound system, welcoming travelers to the live music capital of the world with a dose of one if its major exports.

After the KUTX engineer told him bandwidth was available, Reilly came up with the idea of creating another HD channel using only Texas artists; TMX signed last May. Its online nature and advertiser-free format make it easy to assume that these songs are randomly spit out by a computer, but in this case, an actual human being is behind it: longtime Austin radio personality Susan Castle, Reilly’s colleague at KUTX.

“That was my kind of marching order for her,” Reilly says. “Let’s say it’s playing in a restaurant and a family of four come in and sit down and it’s playing and they hear it: in a set of four songs, both parents, both children; if you have grandma with you, grandpa, they will also hear something. [We’re] trying to reach everyone and just trying to keep it as diverse, stylistically, as possible.

There’s a strange cohesion to its diversity: spend a few hours listening, and patterns begin to emerge. One is the number of artists that many might be surprised to have Texas ties to: Elliot Smith spent part of his childhood in Dallas; Khruangbin is from Space City, not outer space; Nelly, so closely identified with St. Louis, was born in Austin. Another is the number of artists who have reached the top of their respective genres: Ornette Coleman, Sly & the Family Stone, Janis Joplin, Miranda Lambert, Buddy Holly, Beyoncé, George Strait, Lizzo, Selena and so many more.

It’s still very early in the game, but – understandably – TMX feels like it can get a lot bigger. Reilly recently sought feedback from esteemed Texas musicians such as Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson and Adrian Quesada of the Black Pumas, asking them what else was missing, and is exploring possible promotional ties with the Texas Music Office. He can imagine the station playing over the speakers at AT&T Stadium or Minute Maid Park, or maybe the ultimate TMX team.

“If you go to HEB, everything is Texas brand, right down to the tortilla chips,” he says. “But the music is not. It’s the only thing that isn’t.

For now, anyway.

“HEB, call me,” Reilly said. “I love talking about it.”

Chris Gray is a Galveston-based writer.

Christian Gonzalez of Particle FM

San Diego has never really been known for having a thriving experimental or electronic music scene. But Christian Gonzalez hopes to help change that with Particle FM, a DIY online radio station he started in October. The station is currently fundraising to set up a physical space.

Gonzalez, who started DJing at UCSD’s student station KSDT, was inspired to create Particle FM by online radio stations like Dublab, London’s NTS and Lisbon’s Radio Quantica, on which he had his own show for a while. Particle FM’s broadcasts run the gamut from mutant jungle and heartfelt pop to international music and ambient sensory experiences, but the premise is that you’re unlikely to hear these sounds on mainstream radio. .

Gonzalez started Particle FM because he was frustrated with the lack of diversity in San Diego’s music and radio scene. “Our goal is really to give underrepresented people the opportunity to share their music,” he says, including LGBTQ+ people, people from minorities and anyone with non-mainstream musical tastes. Currently, half of the station’s DJs identify as female or non-binary.

Since its inception, the number of shows on the station has doubled. And although the vast majority of its DJs are based in San Diego, they have found listeners in countries around the world. Particle FM hopes its future physical space will give more people the chance to get involved, especially those who may not be able to afford the equipment to stream from home.

“I imagine it as a bond for camaraderie, creativity and learning facilitated by a shared passion for music,” said Laurie Piña, the station’s community outreach coordinator. “I honestly think this will mark a turning point for the San Diego underground and its music scene in general.”

Does TuneIn keep crashing? Read on for the quick fixes to fix it on your Android, iOS, or Roku device.

If you love listening to radio, news, sports broadcasts – or even podcasts – the TuneIn audio streaming service is a valuable platform available on virtually any device you own. Stability issues are most often related to connection issues, but there are some troubleshooting things you can do, depending on your device. If you’re using TuneIn on a PlayStation or Xbox game console, the troubleshooting steps are essentially the same as those listed for mobile and Roku devices.

TuneIn keeps crashing: Android and iOS

There are several things you can do to diagnose TuneIn crashing on iOS or Android, but the first step should always be to restart your device. Sometimes a simple reboot can fix most issues. While you’re at it, it’s a great time to check your WiFI or mobile data connection and make sure there aren’t any outages or anything that could interfere with the proper functioning of the app. . If TuneIn keeps crashing, the next step is to clear the app cache.

Clear cache on iOS and Android

Clearing an app’s cache removes any downloaded files that may interfere with its operation, but it also clears app data, including custom settings. To clear the TuneIn cache:

  1. Press the Settings icon on your device.
  2. Faucet apps and scroll to find To agree.
  3. Choose the Storage options and Empty the cache.
  4. Log back in and verify that To agree does not break down.

Reinstall

If TuneIn still isn’t working after trying all of the above, especially if it’s the only app behaving strangely, it’s time to reinstall it.

  1. Open the play store Where App store and seek To agree.
  2. Press TuneIn and select Uninstall under the available options.
  3. Confirm that you want to uninstall it, then click Install to reinstall it.

TuneIn keeps crashing: Roku

If TuneIn continues to crash on a Roku device, restarting the TV or the Roku itself should resolve most issues.

  1. Unplug the Roku or TV and leave it without power for 5 minutes.
  2. Plug reconnect the power cord and turn on the TV.
  3. Revive To agree.

If a power cycle does not resolve the issue and you have confirmed that there are no connection issues or crashes, try reinstalling the TuneIn app to see if that resolves the issue.

The steps we’ve outlined above should resolve any TuneIn-related issues you may be experiencing. Please let us know if you have a fix for TuneIn crashing that we haven’t covered.

Talk about Grand Automatic Flight 6 It’s been really hot lately. Not that he ever really disappeared, but with GTA 5 being one of the highest grossing video games of the decade, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installment and have been for quite some time now. Unfortunately, there may still be a few years to wait. But in the meantime, there are plenty of rumours, theories, and leaks, including one that says an announcement may be coming soon.

More on the GTA forums, as reported by PCGamesN, GTA online players spotted a piece of audio that may or may not hint at some details to come on Grand Automatic Flight 6. Basically, in the game, the radio announcer can be heard saying something about how tropical storms are coming “next week”. It seems very tenuous at best, but some people think it could be an easter egg about the next entry in the series. The fact that he mentions these storms makes some people think that this is a place subject to tropical weather. Vice City, which is based in Miami, is such a place.

GAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

RELATED: Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Add New Cities After Launch

As many probably already know, it has been strongly suggested that Grand Automatic Flight 6 will be set in Vice City, or at least a more updated version of the location of the classic 2002 episode, which also begins with a tropical storm warning. It goes without saying that the radio announcement in GTA online could easily be nothing, but that doesn’t stop the rumor mills from spinning. Suffice to say, this is best approached with several thousand grains of salt. If there is any official news on GTA 6 next week will be fantastic, but chances are that easter egg won’t mean anything.

While there is still no word on when the next game will appear, although it could be anywhere between 2023 and 2024, it has been alleged that Grand Automatic Flight 6 has been in development since 2014. Again, there’s no real proof of this outside speculation, but if true, it means the developer started working on it in some form a year later. GTA 5.

Along with these rumors, it also looks like Rockstar is embarking on a hiring spree. This suggests that the development on GTA 6 is ramping up, so maybe there will be announcements soon. Nobody really knows. All fans can do at this point is sit back and wait to see if anything official emerges next week.

Grand Automatic Flight 6 is currently in development.
