A list of television and radio stations “owned by Johann Rupert”

Luxury watchmakers, alcoholic beverages, sports clubs and even our healthcare companies: it is almost harder to find an industry in South Africa in which Johann Rupert HAS NO interest. However, the business empire of the wealthiest citizen of Mzansi, in all likelihood, reaches right into your front room.

How rich is Johann Rupert?

This is because Johann Rupert, as chairman of the investment vehicle Remgro, owns a stake in some very popular media companies. His ventures eMedia Holdings and KTH are among the projects that make money for Remgro, which in turn fills the pockets of the 271st richest person in the world.

  • In fact, if we’re accurate, Johann Rupert currently has a net worth of $9.27 billion – or R139 billion.

The power of Remgro

Earlier this month, we looked at how South African spending habits have helped make Mr Rupert even richer than he already is. Distell, a subsidiary of its holding company, produces 33 alcoholic beverages which generate profits for Remgro.

The investment giant has been around for decades and Johann Rupert is indirectly involved in the fortunes of many South African institutions that form the cornerstones of our economy – it’s no wonder his own personal wealth is over $10 billion. But his adventure in the media is actually relatively recent…

In November 2009, Remgro and VenFin merged, marking Rupert’s first foray into media ownership. Over the past 12 years or so, the multi-billionaire has added a dozen major broadcast stations to its portfolio. His most high-profile captures include TV channels eNCA and e.tv.

However, Jacaranda FM and Kaya FM have some of the largest audiences among all regional radio stations. Here is the list of all media houses that have Remgro as a holding company:

  • AND V
  • ENCA
  • Open view
  • YFM
  • Open News
  • Kagiso Media
  • Jacaranda FM
  • East Coast Radio
  • Kaya FM
  • Gagasi FM
  • OFM
